Rick in Australia March 2001
On a business trip to Australia for a very busy and short week. Unfortunately there was a huge cyclone going on for most of the week I was there, so I didn't get out much. I got only one day to get out and about into the 'hinterland' and these pictures are from this trip...

  • Ta da! The mobile that got us to the mountain!
  • Here's a picture out the window climbing a particularily gnarly piece of road in the 4x4. Unfortunately it's really hard to tell, but it was impressive what the car would actually go up!!!
  • Pretty cool tree that looks like it has a mop of edible grass ontop - it's not a palm tree and this one is about 400 years old!!!
  • Jungle boy - looking up into the canape of trees...
  • And here's what you would actually see. The rainforest and appropriately it was raining with the clouds hanging in the trees....
  • Presenting - Mother nature in action!!! Do I get the job????
  • Big ass lizard! This guy was about 8 feet long with tail. Very slow moving guy... he's harmless <s>....
  • Ranger Greg in the middle of an anectdote...
  • Peacock found at lunch at the resort we ate at. Apparently this guy just hangs out there and shows off a lot <bg>...
  • Taking a break in front of a cool stream. You can't see it but I climbed up a tree here... (bad photographer in action <s>)
  • Breakfast of champions - bread, jam, tea and a whole buncha mosquitos. Did I mentioned mosquitos love to eat me <s>...
  • Big ass tree and roots... this tree is actually two trees: The original eucalyptus tree which is covered by the roots of another tree that grows top down to cover the host tree and totally covers it with its roots. That's the vines around the tree you see. Some of these can outlive the host tree - the tree inside might die and the inverted tree continues to live and is totally hollow inside. Very cool - mother nature on this one.
  • Two very large gum trees in the rain forest
  • Wet and doused between the two eucalyptus trees...
  • Cool waterfall in the first stretch of rainforest... This picture kind of has all of the elements, eh?
  • The accidental tourist? Grrrrrr..... I hate to be labeled tourist, but I guess I am the fucking tourist here <s>... Ranger Greg insisting I play my part <bg>...
  • Very wet, and very green. Typical rainforest view - very rich colors!
  • Posing for the masses <s>... same tree, same stream... I like this picture, captures the mood of this adventure rather appropriately.
  • A second waterfall. VIew from the top...
  • *after* going swimming underneath the waterfall. The cameramen and women couldn't figure out how to start the camera, so this is only a little late...
  • Eucalyptus tree also called a Gum Tree... Fresh rain made this one look real slick and glossy. Cool picture...
  • View of the bush from Mt. Tamborine. If you look closely on the right you can see the darker colors of green which is the rainforest...
  • Bird in hand at O'Reilly's farm. Pretty bird, bad environment... bunch of tourists feeding these beautiful birds seed. Quite the circus...
  • Surfer's Paradise beach. Looks more like Miami beach and it sure wasn't a surfer's paradise. Mushy and muddy waves and dangerous rip tides cutting it all up on top of it. I had another picture that corrupted looking at the hotel chains and the 'incident' - somebody drowned that day and there were helicopters and beach patrol guys all around looking the other way...
  • Bugs in Sufer's Paradise. Thought this was a cool one...
  • This was me most of the nights... hanging out in the hotel room...working. Grrr.
