If you’re using Windows Vista Beta 2 and you are using SnagIt 8.1 or earlier from TechSmith you'll find that any of its COM object integration doesn't work. SnagIt comes with a COM interface that can be automated quite easily and this interface is used to hook into various Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) as well as into third party tools. I hook SnagIt in Help Builder to allow screen captures right into a topic.
I just got a note from Techsmith support with a resolution of the problem which requires a couple of small registry tweaks. Looks like their COM object registration adds a blank AppID value to the keys entered and Vista appears to be more finicky with these keys than XP was.
Anyway the fix is to remove the AppId keys from the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{14272504-E2BE-4976-A47C-7AEE1711C690}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{818B0232-68D9-483B-9854-ACABC0FA61CC}
And voila, the SnagIt COM object works again in Office apps and also in Help Builder.
This has been bugging me a bit as I’ve been writing documentation in Help Builder these last few days and it’s sooo much nicer to directly capture out of a help topic as opposed to running SnagIt externally and then pull the image into the topic.
