Vista 5308 Install on VPC crashes

Ok, so I'm trying to get Vista installed on my laptop using VPC and not having much luck here. I did manage to get it installed on another desktop machine a while back after some major tweaking with the partitions. Apparantly that's a known problem – you have to set up a partition then restart to get Windows to recognize the partition.

With VPC however I never even get that far. I get this lovely error right during startup:

This is kind of a show stopper <g>. I really need to get Vista or Longhorn installed on my VPC to be able to do my IIS7 presentation next month.

Anybody have any ideas?

OK, so it might not be the best idea, but try the newer build 5308 is february CTP, and there is a march one floating around on the beta site.

Might work :)

Hi Nic,

Thanks. I'm just doing that now. I was able to get a newer build to boot up at least and it's installing (very, very slowly) as we speak.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Running one of these intermediate builds is a little scary though <g>... We'll see. A bad build is better than no build I hope.

Man I wish Microsoft would distribute these installs on VPC - that'd make life a lot easier.

I had the exact same problem except I was running Virtual Server 2005. The fix was Virtual Server 2005 R2. I know you're using VPC... but... just thought I'd let you know what fixed my problem. Good luck with that.

Just for infomation, that I/O error status 0xc0000010 means INVALID_DEVICE.

Another thought... I actually picked up a second hard drive for my laptop. They're pretty cheap ($70-$120) and they allow you to give demos on Vista/O12 without the "I'm running this on a virtual so it might be a little slow" excuse. Of course, sometimes it's very nice to have that in your pocket in case your demo dies :)

I have a Dell Inspiron and it is pretty easy to swap out the hard drive... you may want to make sure yours is easy too before you buy :)

I was getting exactly same error; except it was virtual server 2005. I upgrated virtual server 2005 to Virtual server 2005 R2.

I finally managed to get a more recent build to install AND to get the Vista Specific Virtual Machine Additions to install. This is build 5381.1 and it seems to work Ok.

Very, very slow though regardless of the machine additions, which I was hoping was the problem previously. Other VPC installs - Windows 2003 and XP run very well on this machine, but Vista sucks ass in performance.

Oh yeah, let me just start NTVDM back up Mr. Windows…. like I know what the hell that is? I did some research on this and found out that NTVDM. exe is. It basically allows you to run Dos programs on Windows NT or XP successfully. It emulates the old school DOS/ 16- bit operating system to allow older programs to run, such as the command prompt eh?

So, in this respect, I think Colleges of Computing are a good thing, since computing seems vaguely equally significant as say, the arts. But don’ t think this is just a screenshot kinda thing. This shows actual things about your system making it look VERY legit. There is also an option for“ fake disk activity.” Now… if I could just get this on workstation of my boy Shane Henderson.
