Music Match bites the big one

Since I’ve gotten an IPOD about a year ago I haven’t been using my music player on the laptop in quite a while. On my machine I use Music Match mainly because it does the best job ripping music of the general public music players out there and because I also routinely have to convert WAV files to MP3 and MM is one of the few that does this easily.

So today I fire up MM for the first time in months and the damn thing dies on start up. It asks me whether I want to upgrade to the latest and greatest, which at this point I don’t want to. I say no and the program dies. Ok, maybe I should upgrade after all. Try that and it tells me the updater is not compatible. Great.

Apparently a new version came out recently and because of a bug in the updater my that I can’t turn off my perfectly fine version of MM is no longer running…

Thanks a lot for that bit of CRAPPY software. Who was the genius in charge of that testing unit?

This intrusive checking for updates is getting annoying. WinAmp too asks each time if I want to upgrade from V3 to 5. No thanks – I can do without the bloat. Repeat after me – it’s a MUSIC player not a freaking multi-media crap machine of various less than mediocre players and cheap ass adware…

Checking for updates

Amen, brother! I recently upgraded the anti-spam utility that I use, and lo and behold it installs a background daemon from InstallShield to wake up every so often and look for updates. And of course it insists on sticking an icon in the System Tray too. So now I have three or four different services running 24 hours a day, just in case an upgrade comes out. (Windows Update, Anti Virus, this InstallShield thing, and one or two others).

Whats really annoying is if you are out of town or something, and come back to boot your PC after 2 weeks of downtime. Guess what, all of these auto-update programs kick off all at the same time and try to simultaneously download updates. It can render a system totally unusable for several minutes.

Updating software should be an OS service that third-party applications can plug into. Of course, Microsoft can't even get its own patches aligned under one update system, so I guess its asking too much for them to help us with our updates too.

You DO want to upgrade from Winamp 3. Seriously. That atrocity was stillborn. Winamp 5 is a return to form.

I'm still using MM 7.0 and don't want to upgrade cause it works fine for me. But in 7.0, there is an option to uncheck so that it doesn't go out and check updates.

Rick, I used to use MM also, but have moved on to CDex...

It's free, small, very configuarable (can even plug in other encoders), it uses the Lame encoder (usually rated the highest quality), and has a ton of options. Give it a try, I think you'll be very happy with it.

Hey Rick,

I'm not sure if ever used the RealPlayer, but I had a version that was perfect, no internet advertisement! When it told me a new update was available, I thought oh, new features, better quality, why not, after the update I got all this nightmare internet advertisements!! I hate it!! There was a time, when an update was helpful, but today, an update can make your peaceful PC life worse and worse!!!

Okay let me shed some light on all this BS.
I'm not upgrading to nothing that don't work. I have been using musicmatch for years and 7.5 is where the buck stops. 9.0 can't rip jack from my Kenwood TrueX 52 CD-ROM. Hello! Mcfly! why in the hell would you exclude your software from the fastest CD-rom in the world? huh? what? speak up now we all really want to know. anyway aside from that I have tried Cdx and it works fine if you like to play with settings an learn how to use the hundreds of encoders, decoders and codecs out there. btw lame dose sound good but before you go out and use it know this. most hardware and many software players can't handle it just like with MP3pro. no matter how you cut it fronhoffer encoders get my vote as the most versatile even if they don't sound as good. for the money id have to say its probably best to go with media Jukebox they have lame support as well as many others.

Now about windows Up dates. F$%# Um! the only thing you need to do to protect your PC for the most part is to selectively disable Java, active scripting, for all but sites you know you can trust, install a good host file, use a decent fire wall with a big 20 Character password, go to GRC's site to make sure everything is running stealth and try not to use IE. more hackers crack that browser than any other. other than that install ad aware pcdoctor and Spybot search and destroy. run them pereoticly & if you keep getting an 226 error uninstall spyware doctor search and destroy and only install it when you want to scan your system. that it my tips should keep you going if you add all this with a little common sense such as Porn sites are bad for your computer. no computer is fail safe unless i build it :)

I made the mistake od upgrading music match and it does not work and keeps freezing up now I can't get the crap off of my computer. Tech support is a joke. My advice to any and all don't do it.

Since I used Music match and then installed Real Player, I tunes and also Total Recorder, as well as using WINDOWS Media Player, can't seem to get sound rather than occasionally.

In the past MM was updated quite regularly, it seams since BMC has taken over there are now updates anymore. Took the money from the Clients directly to their bottom line? This not Hostsoftware Guys, where you can screw your Clients, there is other players out there.

Look guys and gals, we are not going to win on this one. The big guys once again have brought us to our knees. But we can do this, we can as mentioned learn how to properly setup our systems, avoid sites we do not trust, never download anything from the net....period. Even windows can be picked up at your local PC dealers with a clean scan...

As for MusicMatch, as also mentioned, I loved them and now...I f....hate um. They screwed up two of my laptops and wasted four of my days off work to no end. So, don't use them unless you really know what your doing. bY THE WAY, mUSICmATCH ? yAHOO, 10 pLUS NO WAY, LOST ABOUT 100 TRACKS...GOOD LUCK, LOADING THEIR SO CALLED LICENSES

Was loading MP3's from an old Dell Digital Jukebox, due to needing MM for work with. Well I really only needed Dell DJ Player, but when messing around with MM, now my Dell laptop creates no sounds. Not even a bell sound when I plug in a USB cable.

Oh brotha. Anyone have a tip for fixing this mute issue????
