I live on Maui in Hawaii and well, it's happened! Pigs learned to fly and hell is about to freeze over. So much for global warming, eh?
This is a picture from across the street looking up to Haleakala and there's been snow on the mountain for the last few days. It's been unseasonably cold here on Maui for the last few days with some wicked rainy weather to go along with it. According to the weather service it's been the second coldest winter on record so far with a lot of non-sunny days and cold North winds blowing.
It's downright cold at mid-50's. I had to close the doors and put on a t-shirt to sleep dang it. <g>
Since I've been here since 1999 I've only seen one other occasion when there was snow on Haleakala, but it wasn't quite as much and it didn't stick around. Authorities closed the park up top immediately due to 'dangerous conditions'. Uh huh... I'm glad somebody's watching out for us. No sense getting out the snowboard though - 1 inch of top snow over razor sharp lava rock would result in a very short and probably painful ride...
Mauna Loa on the Big Island is a bit taller at 13,600 feet and frequently is snow covered in the winter, but it's extremely rare for Haleakala at about 10,000 feet to get snow over here. Brrr...
