Whidbey Beta 2 – still no luck with Smart Devices

I did a repair install of VS.NET 2005 Beta 2 last night to try and get the package registration for the smart device stuff to clear up. The repair install seemed to fix the startup problems that the IDE had previously and my SQL Server Explorer now works a little better – there are still errors that occur when trying to create connections but at least it doesn’t fail.

The Smart Device stuff still doesn’t work though. I can create a new smart device project but as soon as a form gets added, it can’t deal with the interface in the designer.

Note the the system cannot find the file specified. It might help to know WHICH file, but that’s another story <g>…

Plain Windows Forms work so this is definitely specific to Devices. At this point in the project I hadn't even selected which type of device to use so once I get to the Resource project options I get this:

which points a little more closely at the problem. I tried the re-registration but no luck in getting that to work either.

Is anybody else seeing this with smart devices in Beta 2?

I guess I’m canceling my SmartPhone session for VS 2005 at DevTeach. I’ve been spending too much time trying to figure out why this isn’t working and although a couple of folks from Microsoft actually jumped in with an offer to help or send updated code they never actually came through…

Onwards, to things that actually work…

Rick,

Is this realated to running under VPC? I have read that you can't run the WinCE/PPC emulator under VPC. Emulation does not work under emulation.

Why not use the excellent filemon tool from www.sysinternals.com to discover which file the system can't open?

There are a number of known issues that are written about in the SQL Server 2005 mobile edition read me file. Just check that you have done the following....
1. if you are on sql server 2005 & running under Windows server 2003 ensure that you have installed the replication components otherwise the monile edition tools setup may fail without notification.
2. If you are on SQL Server 2000 ensure that you have installed service pack 3a replication components.
3. If you are using XP with SP2 you need to specifically enable the http and or https services by double clicking on the windows firewall in control panel and going to the advanced tab, then in network connection settings select the connection and click settings. Select the web server or secure web server and ensure that the server name or ip address is correct and then click on ok.

Best of luck... I've not tried it yet, but i fully intend to some time in the very near future. I was doing some mobile apps a while ago using SQL Server CE 2.0... let me know how the new one is!
