This month I talk about what's coming in ASP.NET 3.5 and some of the new .NET Framework features that I think will have the biggest effect on day to day development. A good chunk of the editorial talks about LINQ and the related language features that make it work as well as some of the improvements in Visual Studio.

I have been using ObjectDataSource for getting data. It becomes a nice and clean way to have DAL. Whenever I need data, I never go read the data directly. I always go thru' ObjectDataSource. Do I really need to learn LINQ? Apar from it providing an OR Mapper, I don't see any advantage over ObjectDataSource.

Not all data needs to go into a data source and frankly there are easier ways to databind even with business objects than an ObjectDataSource which is a very tightly coupled implementation.

LINQ is interesting for it's ORM'ish stuff and for the language semantics. I'm not sure whether LINQ to SQL will be good enough in terms of performance and for use in the business layer because of the local scoping issue I mentioned above. I can't really see how dynamic queries can be served efficiently through LINQ if they are going to be served out of a business layer through LINQ. But apparently I'm the only who sees this as a problem <shrug>...

LINQ is about much more than data. Regardless of what you do with data, you'll need to get familiar with LINQ because it will crop up in just about any non-linear code that manipulates list data I'd guess.

True. I've to learn LINQ if I have to decipher other peoples' code. But if I was coding anything, I always will do it in ObjectDataSource.
