ASP.NET Projects to WAP conversion

I've had several people contact me recently regarding issues in upgrading their projects to Web Application Project from stock ASP.NET 2.0 projects. While the process is fairly straight forward, there are a few gotchas worth mentioned here.

Aaargh - nVidia Card Bombs my Laptop

My machine's video card took a shit this morning. In the middle of work the video went blank and never recovered. On subsequent reboots - blue screen or lock ups and video scramble. It looks like this is a hardware failure in the nVidia drivers and apparently only when using the higher end video features in Aero as the card works with the VGA driver.

ASP.NET Caching under Memory Pressure

On my server most of my apps are failing to store content in the ASP.NET Cache, most likely because the memory usage is pretty high and memory available is low.

RSS Feed Issues

Looks like my RSS feed is acting up but I can't see the forest for the trees apparently because I don't see anything wrong. Behavior causes some doubling up in some news readers, but oddly enough only in some and then only in sporadic operation.

.NET includes support for JavaScript as a .NET language, but it's not talked about a lot. More interesting though is that you can access the JavaScript runtime from your C#/VB.NET code and it's pretty easy to do although it's not well documented. Here are a few starter scenarios...

Microsoft released a patch yesterday for the buggy HID driver that caused system idle state issues, which resulted in problems with Sleep mode in Vista as well as various Intellisense issues in Visual Studio 2005.

Field Value not setting...

I've run into an odd problem that I can't figure out. Maybe I'm just missing something obvious but I have a situation where a field value simply will not set. No error, no failure, but the value assigned simply is ignored.

Now that GZip is natively available in .NET 2.0 it's very easy to compress your ASP.NET content with GZip compression.

When using an XmlWriter to generate output to anything but files you'll want to be careful of the Byte Order Marks that get generated by default.

Bugged by a Serialization Assembly

I ran into a problem with a type that wouldn't serialize properly because - gulp - of a bad DefaultValue attribute value. It's not a good feelign to have the XmlSerializer fail, but there's a way to actually debug this.
